Communications Tips, July 31, 2012 Obamacare is to Women's Health Care What Title 9 was to Women's Athletics
Beginning August 1 the new preventive healthcare provisions in the health law go into effect making preventive care and treatments more accessible and affordable to millions of Americans. From mammograms to annual well-woman visits, from contraception to maternity care, the health law will make an enormous difference in the lives of women of all ages.

MAKE A BIG DEAL ABOUT IT, BECAUSE IT’S A BIG DEAL FOR WOMEN!
Connect—to the Public
It's time women had someone on our side. With passage of the health law women finally have relief from an insurance industry that rigged the health care system so they could make more dollars off of women. Politicians—many in the pocket of big insurers—are trying to eliminate the law's protections; protections like no more denials due to pre-existing conditions, access to a wide range of preventive services like mammograms without co-pays or deductibles, and no longer will women pay more than men for the same healthcare.
Define – the Preventive Services Rolling Out August 1
Over the next few years, as an increasing number of health plans come under the law’s reach, more and more women will have access to a wide range of preventive services without co-payments or deductibles. Beginning August 1, the following services will be a part of all new health plans:
- Breastfeeding support, supplies, and counseling
- Contraceptive methods and counseling
- Screening and counseling for domestic partner violence
- Screening for gestational diabetes
- Counseling for sexually transmitted infections, including HIV
- DNA testing for high-risk strains of HPV
Use Values-Based Messaging
Speak to the following values when talking/writing about preventive services:
- Thanks to the law, women will now have greater security and peace of mind when it comes to their healthcare.
- Thanks to the law, middle class families will now have more security and improved health.
- Prevention is a wise investment.
