Message of the Week, January 7, 2011: Pushing Back Against Repeal
What We Stand to Lose by Going Backwards:
Repeal would rip up the new Patient's Bill of Rights, which outlaws the worst abuses of health insurers:
- Guaranteed coverage and fair pricing, regardless of pre-existing conditions.
- Affordable health coverage including protection from take-aways and caps on coverage by insurance companies.
- Preventive care for our families.
- Small business tax credits and purchasing pools that will result in a third more small firms providing insurance for their employees.
- Real action to cut down on waste, fraud and abuse in Medicare.
And don't forget:
- The new requirement that members of Congress get the same healthcare coverage as millions of Americans will be eliminated.
- New measures to cut down on waste, fraud and abuse in Medicare will be eliminated.
- There will be no relief for seniors who fall into the Medicare prescription drug coverage gap.
Double Standard:
Congressional promoters of repeal plan to take away from the American people the very benefits and rights that they have courtesy of American taxpayers - and they intend to keep theirs.
This is nothing but political theater.
Address others as they come, incluing:
- There are no hearings – No CBO score
- It is insincere to run on a platform of openness and fiscal discipline and then in one of your first acts as the majority party bring major legislation to the floor without any public hearings and without paying for the trillion dollar cost of repeal
Don't Waste Time - Create Jobs:
Every minute wasted on trying to repeal healthcare reform fruitlessly is one less minute the Republicans will spend on job creation and turning this economy around.
This is a matter of priorities - don't take away benefits families need. Focus on helping families make ends meet and help states control escalating healthcare costs.
We desperately need leaders focused on creating more good jobs and strengthening our economy, not on political games like repealing healthcare reform.
Overarching Messages (weave in or infer):
The law preserves what works while giving Americans the freedom to change jobs and the security of knowing you won't lose your house because someone in your family got sick.
The law gives our children a chance a life of better health and affordable care.
Working people need to have the security of knowing their families will get needed affordable care.
